HUDSON -- Persy Sample is scheduled to turn 25 April 16.
The Lady Explorers nearly gave the second-year Hudson head girls lacrosse coach that many goals as an early birthday present.
The host Lady Explorers improved to 2-2 on the season after posting a commanding 20-9 victory over Bath Township Revere April 15 at Hudson Memorial Stadium.
With the win, Hudson improved to 2-2 on the season. The Lady Minutemen dropped their first game of the season to fall to 6-1.
"The first year, we wanted to get 24 for my birthday," Sample said. "This year, we wanted to get 25. I'll take 20."
Revere scored the first two goals before Hudson's offense took complete control.
The Lady Explorers outscored the Lady Minutemen 10-1 in a span of 18 minutes in the opening half.
Once again, though, Hudson started slowly in the second half.
Revere, which got a goal with less than two minutes left in the first half, scored the first two goals of the second half to cut the Lady Explorers' advantage to 10-6.
But Hudson completely dominated the rest of the way.
"We're still trying to figure things out," Sample said. "We learned that we can play better. It's a young team and there is still a lot of learning to do."
The Lady Explorers, who lost to 2016 Division I state runner-up Massillon Jackson 15-5 April 13 at Hudson Memorial Stadium, took advantage of several Lady Minutemen fouls to score six free-position goals.
"The score of the Jackson game didn't reflect our defense," Sample said. "I thought the defense played really well. They capitalized on moments that we missed."
Maddie Valko led Hudson with six goals and Elizabeth Hinkle had two goals and four assists.
Corinne Hunt added four goals and two assists and Sarah Keller finished with three goals for the Lady Explorers.
Also contributing for Hudson were Kendall Paltani (two goals and two assists), Piper Trattner (one goal), Sarah Hinkle (one goal), Julia Stiles (one goal) and Ari Bankovich (two assists).
Elle Marquez won 11-of-12 draws and Elizabeth Hinkle won 11-of-18 draws for the Lady Explorers.
Hudson goalies Addie Gojdics and Kristin Potts played one half apiece.
Gojdics made two saves in the first half and Potts stopped three shots in the second half.
Eliana Burlotos scored the first four goals for Revere. Courtney McClellan added three goals and Jordan Zablo had one goal and one assist for the Lady Minutemen.
Revere also got a goal from Rachel Ritzic.
Prior to the game, the Lady Explorers sold T-shirts and had a bake sale for Lacrosse Out Cancer. Proceeds from the sale went to the Karen Wellington Foundation for Living with Breast Cancer.
"We raised $2,500 last year," Sample said. "We hoped to raise more than that. It's our way of giving back to the community."
The Lady Explorers were scheduled to visit Green April 18 in Uniontown. Results were not available at press time.
They are set to visit Gates Mills to play Hawken April 25 at 5 p.m.
