The Western Reserve Community Band opens their 20th Anniversary season with a Spring Concert theme of Unique Favorites. The band performs both challenging and interesting music for this concert including a World Premier by local composer John M. Pasternak written for Solo Horn and Concert Band.
WRCB have reached out to recognize the city's civic leaders for their contributions to Hudson. Leaders joining us for this concert include Meredith Zaffrann the Director of HCER, Hudson City Council member Beth Bingham, Hudson Board of Education President David Zuro and member Tom Tobin along with Hudson's Mayor David Basil, They will join the band to be featured as percussion soloists in Concerto for Soloists and Band by James Ployhar.
This concert includes four works composed specifically for concert band: "A Festival Prelude" by Alfred Reed, "Variations on a Korean Folk Song" by John Barnes Chance, "The Hobbits" by Johann De Meij and "Exploration for Solo Horn and Concert Band" by John M. Pasternak. Two transcriptions: "Overture to Colas Breugnon" by Kabalevsky and "Symphony No. 3" ("Slavyanskaya") by Kozhevnikov keeps the band on their musical toes. Vocalist MJ Lehman will sing Gershwin's "Embraceable You."
A medley from the original Star Wars by John Williams and a medley from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein help cover the movies and Broadway. This promises to be a great evening of music. Join friends and neighbors as they perform this 20th Anniversary Concert program.
Conductor Ralph Meyer, who founded the band in 1997, said the audience is in for a musical anniversary treat. This free concert is presented at 7:30 p.m. on April 22 in the Hudson Middle School Auditorium located at 77 N. Oviatt St., Hudson.
